Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift (mastopexy) addresses loss of projection in the breasts caused by weight loss, pregnancy, aging and the natural effects of gravity. Through a sophisticated combination of artistry and scientific craft, Long Island Plastic Surgical Group’s surgeons can lift the breasts, replacing the appearance of sagginess and loss of volume with a beautiful, natural and more youthful look.

A breast lift works by removing extra skin and tightening the skin of the breast area, thereby “lifting” the breasts to a firmer position. It can also reposition and improve the appearance of the areola (the dark-pigmented skin surrounding the nipple). A lift does not add volume or fullness, which must be achieved in combination with breast augmentation. Since pregnancy and breastfeeding can stretch the skin of the breasts, our surgeons can discuss alternatives to breast lift surgery for women who are planning to have children.

Breast Lift Procedure

Long Island Plastic Surgical Group’s surgeons customize breast lift procedures according to each patient’s individual needs. Typically, surgery is performed with an incision around the areola that follows down to the crease of the breast often called an “anchor scar”. This can be coupled with the “short scar” technique in some cases, which utilizes a short incision that allows for minimal scarring. This incision runs vertically downwards from the areola all the way to the crease where the breast meets the chest. Skin is removed around this incision and a firmer breast is the result, minimizing skin loss and also scarring. The entire procedure usually takes less than two hours to complete and is typically performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. This procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis in the convenience of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group’s state-of-the-art, fully accredited ambulatory surgery center in Garden City or at area hospitals.

Breast Lift Recovery

Following a breast lift procedure, some degree of bruising and swelling can be expected. Most patients are able to return to normal daily routines after about a week; however, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for several weeks after surgery.

This special technique provides more enduring results than those from traditional breast lift procedures, and is unique in using a woman’s own tissue to provide support to the underside of the breasts. This excess tissue is placed beneath the breasts and is attached to the chest wall, giving the breasts more structural support and helping them stay in a higher position for a longer period of time. Recovery time is typically the same as with traditional breast lift surgery.
